How I Created Critical Thinking Questions for my Lessons with ChatGPT (Instructions)

Hi teachers. Here’s how you can generate questions with ChatGPT that encourage students to think deeply—without spending hours brainstorming. Best of all, this method is free and easy to use.

Here's how I did it:

STEP 1: DEFINE YOUR LESSON TOPIC AND OBJECTIVES

Clearly outline the subject matter and learning objectives of your lesson. This will help the AI generate relevant and focused questions.
Prompt: "I'm a [role] teacher, teaching a lesson on [topic] to [grade level] students. The learning objective is to help them understand [specific concept]."

STEP 2: REQUEST OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS

Ask the AI to generate open-ended questions that promote critical thinking and cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no."
Prompt: "Generate a list of open-ended, thought-provoking questions about [topic] that encourage critical thinking."

STEP 3: INCORPORATE HIGHER-ORDER THINKING SKILLS

Use Bloom's Taxonomy to create questions that require analysis, evaluation, and creation.
Prompt: "Using Bloom's Taxonomy, create questions for [topic] that require analysis, evaluation, and creation skills."

STEP 4: CUSTOMIZE FOR STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

Tailor the questions to your students' interests and experiences to increase engagement.
Prompt: "Modify the questions to relate to [students' interests or real-world applications], making them more engaging for [grade level] students."

STEP 5: INCLUDE MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONNECTIONS

Encourage students to make connections between the topic and other subjects or global issues.
Prompt: "Create questions that connect [topic] to other subjects or current global issues, promoting interdisciplinary thinking."
Feel free to use this free template to streamline the process of generating critical thinking questions for your lessons.
